This article describes the membership levels, costs and benefits available to individuals and clubs.

For details of the benefits of each level please click on the name in the index above. The BFA Levy is passed on to British Fencing to cover centrally administered items such as The Sword magazine, Insurance, National competitions and Elite fencing.
You must be 13 or over (as defined by the age on January 1st in the season of the competition - 1st September to 31st August) to enter any event in which adults are allowed to compete. This applies to all events regardless of Organisers or category and is a BFA Safety Rule.
i.e. For season 2008-2009 the fencers must have been born in 1996 or earlier to compete in events with adults. (2009/10 - 1997, 2010/11 - 1998, 2011/12 - 1999, 2012/13 - 2000, etc.)
For all memberships age restrictions, the relevant date is 1st January in the season of the competition. The season runs from 1st September to 31st August.
Now here is the small print!
All membership details are held on computer for the purpose of membership processing. This may involve your name, club and other non-personal details appearing on web sites such as online membership, rankings and competition results. We will never publish your address, phone number or email address without your express permission. We do not share the membership information with third parties except where this is necessary for normal membership related activities. All such third parties are bound by strict confidentiality rules. We may use your details to contact you by letter, phone or email from time to time about matters related to your membership. You may ask us not to publish any information relating to your membership and we will comply with this request as far as our direct activity is concerned. You should be aware that certain normal fencing activities (such as entering competitions or holding a national ranking) will require you to permit these details to be published. All members agree to be bound by the rules of England Fencing including without limit the Rules for Competitions, Publicity Code, Child Protection Policy, Equality Policy, Anti-Doping Code and Disciplinary Procedures.
Full
Full membership is the normal level for adult fencers and includes:-
- Insurance
- The Sword magazine
- The right to vote in England Fencing general meetings including the AGM and in England Fencing elections
- Full membership of British Fencing, including the right to vote at BFA general meetings and in board elections
Under 20
Junior membership is available to fencers from the age of 13 up to 20 and includes:-
- Insurance
- The Sword magazine
- The right to vote in England Fencing general meetings including the AGM and in England Fencing elections (Over 18 only)
- Full membership of British Fencing, including the right to vote at BFA general meetings and in board elections (Over 18 only)
Under 13
Musketeer membership is available to fencers under the age of 13 and includes:-
- Insurance
- The Sword magazine
Social
Social membership is open to any fencer without age limit. It is intended to provide a basic level of membership for those fencers who participate only at a single club and do not enter competitions.
Social membership includes:-
- Insurance cover while fencing only at your registered and affiliated club.
Social membership is not suitable for any fencer who:-
- Fences at more than one club
- Wishes to enter more than one local competition per year
- Wishes to participate in inter-club matches or open competitions
Membership Upgrades
Upgrades from one class of membership to another during the membership year are possible but will invlove some additional cost.
In order to upgrade, you must renew your membership at the new level for 12 months from the date you wish to upgrade. The unexpired portion of your old membership grade is lost.
Breaks in Membership
Because of the importance of maintaining full insurance cover, we do not allow breaks in membership simply due to late renewals. When you renew, your effective renewal date will always be taken from the previous expiry date unless there are special circumstances such as maternity or long term illness.
